As we got to the part where Julian was really starting to show his true colors, my youngest daughter asked, "Why are some people really mean?"
I paused and really thought about what I wanted to say to her about people, and being mean. I paused. And paused. And paused. And finally said, "I don't know."
She continued, "And, why is Donald Trump always so loud and grumpy on tv?"
A LOT MORE PAUSING...
I finally interrupted my conflicted pause and said, "Sometimes we're mean because we don't know any better. Sometimes we're mean because we think it's the cool thing to do. And sometimes we're mean because we're hurting inside and just say stuff that's hurtful. But...what's important is that if those "sometimes" happen to us, that we fix it. And try better the next time."
She responded, "I like this book. I'm sad for Auggie though. But I think I'm learning from it."
Yes! You! Are! You're learning. I'm learning. And we're having some meaningful conversations!
