Yes, spending a night with a bunch of authors is very inspiring. Especially these authors. The authors at this event were all local, or semi local, authors. Most of them have full time day jobs! So somewhere in between working a full 40hr week and being parents and having a life they manage to squeeze in some time to bang out a young adult novel about kid hackers or a retelling of our favorite fairytales. One of the authors I had the pleasure of talking with has a full time job with the city of San Antonio trash service doing math equations on excel spreadsheets all day and then writes novels that are retelling of fairytales. Amazing!
It never fails, after listening to authors speak I always leave in awe and questioning, “How do they do it? How do they find the time to live life and be a responsible, functioning adult AND write a novel?” And then, it also never fails, I start to dream and get this false sense of bravado and inspiration that I too can write the next great YA novel. If they can do it then surely I can do it too! I mean, of course, I can. I’ve got stories too, man! Have you met my family? There are plenty of stories from my childhood to fill hundreds of pages!
If you ever have an opportunity to meet and listen to some local authors please do yourself a favor and do it. Not only do local authors need your support as much as the big names do but they need it more! And, you never know, you just might get inspired to sit down and bang out the next great read.
